Meet the Makers - Roving Heart Designs

Here at Providore Place we are so lucky to have a wide range of stallholders share our space every Sunday. Susan McEwan from Roving Heart Designs has been part of the Providore family since May 2018!

Roving Heart Designs began officially in 2016. After moving to Tasmania with her family, Susan returned to her first love of Fine Arts, after having spent 28 years professionally designing and performing in live theatre for over 60 productions in NSW. Starting a new life in Tasmania has been a catalyst for Susan to reconnect with her fine art background by concentrating on the natural beauty and fauna of our state.

Art takes many forms, and depending on the work, can take many long hours in preparation, acquiring the correct materials and spending even longer hours sometimes late into the night getting the work to a finished 'I’m happy with' state. Mixed media artworks can take up to 3 weeks to complete, paintings up to 6 months. Many of Susan’s artworks start with small studies or drawings culminating in a final larger work. She loves mixed media, working in combinations of ink, pastel, watercolour, charcoal and pencil. She draws inspiration from nature, but also from a range of photography, from herself and from the internet, books and magazines.

Susan creates sculptures based on the human form from a product called Paverpol, hand tinting and sourcing a range of natural materials and antique lacework. Each sculpture must be pre-planned and its overall form pre-cut and modelled from scratch, as the wet material only has a minimal play time before it starts to harden. She was so mesmerised when she first saw the art form over 10 years ago in a little gallery in Bellingen, Susan approached Paverpol Australia to train as a certified instructor and she now teaches from her studio in Spreyton for special workshops.

Susan loves the opportunity that having an Art Stall at Providore Place provides.

She says “It is always hard for an artist of any kind to have a public face, and to find an outlet to show, sell and talk about your art. Being an artist can be such an isolating career. It is so personal in many respects, soul revealing at times. To find a supportive environment for any Artist is so important.

I have gone from a producing artist to a selling artist!!! The joy I feel watching my artwork find a new home is so rewarding. As an Artist, my work has improved. Because I have been able to sell, and receive commissions and other work opportunities, I have been able to afford to continue to make art.”

We are so proud to be able to be involved in Susan’s journey, you can find Roving Heart Designs at our Sunday Markets most weekends!
