Meet The Makers - Rex Evans Woodcraft

We like to think of Rex as our very own ‘national treasure’ here at Providore Place. Rex is indeed an artisan at the top of his game. His skill, honed over so many years, is second to none and his love for timber really comes out in his amazing handmade pieces.

When Rex retired after 50 years of working with timber, building houses and making furniture, he realised he wasn’t quite ready to stop working with timber. So he started to make all sorts of timber products in his workshop, these included jewellery boxes, blanket boxes and bread boards. You name it, he made it, and before he knew it, he was in business. Rex Evans Woodcraft was born out of his love for our beautiful Tasmanian Timbers.

Rex uses a wide range of Tasmanian timbers, these include; Huon Pine, Tas Oak, Myrtle, Blackwood, Blackheart Sassafras and King Billy Pine. He selects timber that has been dried for at least 15 years so that it’s well seasoned. He also likes to use only Australian products (where possible) in his finishing processes.

Whilst Rex has many of the traditional timber items you would expect on his stall he also creates his own uniques pieces, many of which are as useful as they are beautiful. Our particular favourite is his kitchen spatula cleverly designed to lift food easily out of any pan. Made for both left and right handers, this is a little piece of expertly crafted Tassie timber you can enjoy every day.

Rex and Margaret are such a joy to have at Providore Place. They love to talk to all of our overseas visitors and locals about the beautiful Tassie timbers Rex uses in his craft, their unique qualities and the process the wood goes through to create each particular piece. From the smallest exquisite jewellery box through to a replica Victorian rocking chair, it’s a rewarding experience to come and take a look at Rex’s expert craftsmanship for yourself.

You can find Rex at the Providore Place Sunday Market most weekends from 10am - 2pm.
